There is nothing quite so welcome as a shelter from a storm. Behold the tent, tarp, bivy or bug net. There is something comforting in a barrier between you and the elements. Tents have come a long way from the pup tent. Tents are now lighter, stronger and more weather resistant than ever before. The science of tent building has introduced hub systems, carbon fiber poles and siliconized nylon. Tents have also become highly specific toward its intended use, from four season shelters tested in wind tunnels for strength, wings that provide shade and rain protection, to ultralight and compact tents intended for bike touring.
Choosing a tent has also gotten tougher, so many great tent builders like Big Agnes, MSR, Hilleberg, Nemo and Sierra Designs make a great tent. Unfortunately, there is no holy grail in tents – yet. Tents are a compromise of space, weight, durability and price. But in talking with many customers about what makes a great tent an it is often the little things like color coded poles, simple fast setups and good ventilation that make tent stand out. But the number one thing we hear is about a users favorite tent is “It kept me dry!”
